ALZU manufactor a range of products that can be used in a feed program

The feeding program can be divided into different phases:

          1. Lamb Feeding - Before weaning
          2. Lamb Feeding - After weaning until marketing
          3. Breeding Animals - Ewes
          4. Breeding Animals - Rams

1. Lamb Feeding - Before Weaning

The birth mass of the lamb is directly in line with survival, after birth growth and the production ability of the lamb.

At birth the lamb's rumen is not active, so that the lamb cannot digest any fibre. Just after birth the lamb can absorb antibodies from the ewe through the colostrums. This opportunity only last for the first 16-48 hours, thereafter the permeability of the small intestines change, and the immunoglobins cannot cross over the membrane any more. If there isn't any colostrums from the ewe, because of disease or death, use colostrums out of the fridge or colostrums from a cow. It is preferable that the colostrums be from an animal that is on the farm, because the antibodies will then be specific for that environment.

Sometimes the ewe doesn't have enough milk for the lamb. The first sign would be that the lambs tail won't wiggle while it's drinking. If the tail doesn't wag around, there is definitely not enough milk. If this happens, you can either give the lamb additional milk between drinkings, or you can inject oxytocin that will stimulate the production of more milk.

To stimulate the lamb's rumen, it's best to give Creep feeding as soon as possible.

ALZU Creep pellets (Complete calve pellets)

Feeding guidelines:

  • Lambs can be given ALZU Creep pellets from birth until weaning.

  • ALZU Creep pellets must be fed ad lib.

  • On the age of 30 days the lamb should have an intake of 50g/lamb/day.

  • ALZU Creep pellets is the same as ALZU Complete Calve Pellets.

  • It is available in 50kg bags.

    2. Lamb Feeding - After weaning until Marketing

    - The main aim for lambs that's fed up to marketing is economics.
    - A price margin and a feed margin should be calculated.
    - The price margin - The price that is paid for the lamb, and the estimated price per kilogram
      meat to be sold.
    - The feed margin - The feed costs and the average daily gain must be calculated.

    2.1 Processing:

  • Weigh, mark and divide the animals into groups:

  •           - Size
              - Age
              - Gender
              - Horns and no horns
  • Castrate if necessary

  • De-horn - Prevent bruises

  • Dose against internal and external parasites

  • Dip against ticks

  • Vaccinate animals: Pulpy kidney and Blue Tongue

  • Inject Vitamins: Only A and E (rumen digestion is better, as well as less eye and nose
        diseases)

  • Implant with anabolic growth stimulant. Ionophore or metabolic growth stimulant is already
included in ALZU Sheep Finisher and ALZU Sheep Concentrate.

  • 2.2 Feeding Guidelines:

All feedlot sheep should be gradually adjusted on the diet. The normal procedure is that the sheep should be fed hay ad lib, while the finisher concentrate from 100g/sheep/day elevate with 100g/sheep/day until the sheep is feeding ad lib, this should be within 10 days. Palatable roughage, like lusern, sometimes causes an insufficient intake of pellets, which should be be 3% of bodyweight. This can easily be corrected by feeding less palatable roughage.

Daily feeding is preferred for feedlot sheep, in stead of self-feeders. Self feeders lead to accumulation of old feed that is mixed with saliva and will lead to lower intake.

NB! Make sure there is always fresh feed and water ad lib available

    ALZU Sheep Finisher (SK125)

    Feeding guidelines:
  • Place sheep in the feedlot that weigh more than 18 kg.

  • Feed ALZU Sheep Finisher ad lib, with extra roughage during the first two weeks

  • ALZU Sheep Finisher is available in pellets, 50kg bags.

  • ALZU Sheep Concentrate

    Feeding guidelines:
  • ALZU Sheep Concentrate is available for those producers that want to mix their own rations.

  • It is important to use good quality maize with a protein of minimum 8.5%, to get the same
high standard feed as ALZU Sheep Finisher.

  • It is available in meal, 50kg bags.

  • Mix instructions for ALZU Sheep Concentrate

      Kg %
    ALZU Sheep Concentrate 150kg 15%
    Lusern/Tef 200kg 20%
    Maize Leaves 100kg 10%
    Yellow Maize 550kg 55%
    TOTAL 1000kg 100%

    * The final mix must be fed ad libitum

    2.3 Manger and floor space:

Manger Space Sheep 200-300mm per sheep

Floor Space (Standing space) Sheep 1-2 m2

Pens should be designed to keep 30-50 sheep. Shy eaters (usually sheep that weigh less than the other sheep) must be kept in a different pen; this will make the competition with the dominant sheep less. Because a lot of heat is produced from digestion, it is recommended that 0.3-0.5m2 shaded area per sheep should be provided, especially in warm conditions.

    3. Breeding Animals - Ewes

There are many factors that can lead to loss of progeny, like climate, disease, nutrition and pests.

    3.1 Late pregnant ewe:

Low nutrition during the last stage of pregnancy can lead to considerable losses of ewes, because of metabolic disorders, such as pregnancy toxaemia. The ewe doesn't get enough energy through the diet for the demand of the foetus/se. The ewe then mobilizes body fat and changes it to energy, which is then used by the foetus/se leaving the ewe with a lot of ketone bodies in her blood.

Over-feeding is just as bad, because it can lead to birth problems, as well as fat in the udder causing lower milk production.

    ALZU Sheep Finisher (SK125)

    Feeding guidelines:
Ewes in their last 50 days of pregnancy:
Feed 140g ALZU Sheep Finisher/ewe/day as well as good quality roughage ad lib available.

    3.2 Lactating ewe:

The chance of survival and growth rate of the lamb is directly linked to the feeding of the ewe during the last stages of pregnancy and lactation. Ewes on a good feeding program have better udders with higher milk production.

    ALZU Sheep Finisher (SK125)

    Feeding guidelines:
Ewe in the first 8-10 weeks of lactation:
Feed 200-220g ALZU Sheep Finisher/ewe/day as well as good quality roughage ad lib available

Ewe in the last 12-14 weeks of lactation:
Feed 140g ALZU Sheep Finisher/ewe/day as well as good quality roughage ad lib available

    ALZU Ram, Lamb en Ewe

    Feeding guidelines:
ALZU Ram, Lamb en Ewe can also be given to ewes with lambs on pastures.

    4. Breeding Animals - Rams

Rams show a positive reaction with a higher feed intake (flushing) just before and during mating.

    ALZU Ram, Lamb and Ewe

    Feeding guidelines:
Feed ALZU Ram, Lamb and Ewe, ad lib to rams just before and during mating.
